African Folktales Unit
In this unit, students will learn the characteristics of various types of folklore including proverbs, fables, and folktales. They will specifically learn about these types of folklore through the reading African examples of these genres. Further, students will demonstrate the knowledge they've gained reading the various types of folklore through written products, possible multimedia products and oral presentations.

Aztec Folk Tales
In this unit students will read two Aztec folk tales: "Aztec Snow White" and "Legend of the Fifth Sun." Through an exploration of the Internet, students will search for additional information on Mexican volcanoes, the Aztec codices and human sacrifice.

Native American Poetry
This supplementary unit is part of an eighth grade, interdisciplinary Native American archaeology unit, but may be used in upper elementary or high school humanities or American history classes. It is a mini-study of free verse, sensory words used in Native American poetry, and paraphrasing.
